Quest for the Black Pearl

Our ongoing mission is to explore the remote Tahitian islands in search of the rare and beautiful Tahitian black pearl. Along the way we've met many people, Polynesians, French and others, and we heard alot of stories. Below is the web journal of our adventures.

Summer, 1999

Jeremiah returned to Tahiti last month on another black pearl buying expedition. Along the way he investigated reports of a buried treasure from turn of the century. After interviewing several Polynesians from the area he determined the best place to start looking was on the deserted island of Tepoto.

ON MOOREA

After acquiring black pearls on several of the inhabited islands Jeremiah took a side trip to the paradise island of Moorea. On this island he got a traditional Polynesian tatoo and danced with the natives.

December, 1999

Jeremiah returned to French Polynesia last month on another black pearl buying expedition. Not content to ride the Hotu Maru this time Jeremiah commandered a twin engine turbo prop plane and flew direct to Makemo from Tahiti.

ON MAKEMO

Makemo is the third largest coral atoll in the world and is about sixty miles across. This tropical island recently got its first internet connection (at the post office). This is where Jeremiah discovered a noni tree whose fruit produces the popular Noni Juice.

Here Jeremiah met with Floriane who deals in the black pearls. Her husband makes his living as a fisherman.
