Herat is the capital city of the Herat province in northwestern Afghanistan where this rug style originated. The Herati rug can be distinguished by several common design motifs including: A fish and turtle design, a flower enclosed in a diamond with curving leaves paralleling each side, a rosette surrounded by four leaves, a rosette within a diamond, and a rosette surrounded by a fish pattern. Earthy, brown colors are commonly used on Heratis along with reds, blues, and ivory.
