This 1952 coin is a Washington-Carver coin in MS65 condition certified from NGC. In 1951, with much of the half dollars' authorization still available, Congress approved its diversion to a new 50-cent piece honoring Washington jointly with George Washington Carver, a renowned African American botanist. The two men worked closely at Tuskegee, where Carver headed the agricultural department for many years. The Washington-Carver coin was issued annually from 1951 through 1954, with mintages totaling about 2.4 million pieces. Fittingly, both coins not only honored distinguished African Americans, but also were designed by noted sculptor-medalist Isaac Scott Hathaway.
