This is a limited edition heliogravure on laid paper from artist Paul Cezanne. Titled Der Bahndurchstich from the Cezanne und Sein Kreis portfolio published in 1920 by R. Piper & Company of Munchen in a limited edition. The impression measures 6 1/8 by 7 1/2 inches and framed measures 24 by 20 inches. Cezanne was born in Aix-en-Provence France in 1839 and studied art in Paris. His early paintings are done in dark tones but the influence of French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro created a shift to painting in bright hues. While initially exhibiting with the Impressionists he later rejected their ideals and is today more associated with the Post-impressionists. Cezanne was obsessed with visual perception and his works usually show several different viewpoints. The critics were extremely harsh on his work and many debated Cezannes ability to manipulate natures light by the application of a single color. In his final years they began to fully appreciate his originality in color intensity and compositional organization. He lived most of his life in isolation and did not exhibit often leaving many pieces unfinished and destroying many others. Cezanne had a great impact on art of the 20th century and is considered the father of modern art. Media: Heliogravure
