BRONZE MOTHER WOLF AND CUB AFTER P LECOURTIER

This bronze sculpture of a mother wolf walking and holding her cub in her mouth has been made using the lost wax method of casting. The animal is shown carefully carrying her cub in her mouth. The whole has been mounted on a solid marble base. The bronze is embossed with the artists name P. Lecourtier and the bronze foundrys seal. The overall dimensions of this piece are 7.5"h x 9"l x 4.5"d. Prosper Lecourtier (1851 - 1924) was born in Meuse, France July 12th in 1851. He studied under the great sculptor Fremiet. Very little is known about the personal life of this sculptor. That being said, he is known to have exhibited at the Parisian Salon every year between 1875 and 1924, the year of his death. The process of lost wax casting has been used for thousands of years. The first examples of lost wax casting were were found in South East Asia and dated to 3500BC. Aside from minor mechanization, little of this process has changed since its inception. The steps to the modern process are as follows: The piece is first sculpted in clay and then cut into pieces to facilitate the casting. Each piece is then covered in several thin layers of liquid latex making the mould. The bronze will follow this mould so the latex must adhere to the master perfectly. The next step is to apply fiberglass over the latex to serve as a support for the casting. This is called the Mother Mould. The original sculpture is then removed from the mould (destroying it in the process) and wax is poured into the mold in stages to make a hollow wax version of the completed piece. The final steps are extremely time consuming. The wax mold is repeatedly dipped into alternating mixtures of colloidal silica known as slurry and vats of dry silica that alternate from coarse to fine. Once this has dried around the wax the piece is then placed into a kiln to be cured and melt the wax from the inside. Hence the term, Lost Wax Casting. Then hot bronze (about 2000 degrees Fahrenheit) is poured into the mould, as this dries it cracks the silica mould, destroying it. The individual pieces of bronze are then welded back together. This step takes place in the metal room where the critical talent of the artisan transforms the parts into a hollow bronze duplicate of the original clay model. The final step is to heat the finished piece and apply the patina. The patina process is the result of chemical and heat applied in layers. This is an art in itself and requires years of training to master. No two patinas are exactly alike and each piece can take from 8 to 16 weeks to complete after the initial sculpting. (784522)

This folio is considered one of his most important works and stands alone as being representative of his work. Salvador Dali (1904 - 1989) is a Spanish 20th century painter, illustrator, writer and filmmaker. His influence extends to almost every field of the arts and is still felt today. Salvador Dali had the ability to paint in any genre, he is best known as the "Master of Surrealism" because of the way his work explored the unconscious and sleeping mind. He visually challenged and questioned proportion and scale in human and animal forms creating a fantastic, imaginary landscape heavy with symbolic images. Surrealisms influence extended beyond fine art and included film, literature and philosophy and music. Dali explored all of these mediums, earning him the moniker, "Master of Surrealism". Dali was a consummate print-maker, creating over fifteen hundred prints in his lifetime. Dalis approach to printmaking as a medium and not a means for mass production expanded the techniques of the medium itself.(334116)

In 1948 in the workshop of the Parisian lithographic printer Fernand Mourlot, Chagall finally found his home as a printmaker. Under the patient tutelage of printers like Charles Sorlier, Chagall found color lithography to be the perfect graphic medium for his art. Christopher Conrad has written: .lithography soon became his favored printing technique. This is certainly due primarily to the fact that he could integrate the one element he had previously always missed in his graphic art: color. Marc Chagall was 33 years old and already an established artist when he was commissioned to make his first prints in Berlin in 1922. These were all black and white etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts. They were somewhat tentative due to Chagalls unfamiliarity with the graphic techniques. Nevertheless, the vigor and originality of his creativity was evident. Settled in Paris by the fall of 1923, and through an introduction by the poet Blaise Cendrars, Chagall met Ambroise Vollard, the individual whose ambitions in the graphic arts were to monopolize his creativity for the next 15 years. At the time of his death many of his paintings were in his possession, as he had kept off the art market what he didnt need to sell. In addition, Picasso had a considerable collection of the work of other famous artists, some his contemporaries, such as Henri Matisse, with whom he had exchanged works. Since Picasso left no will, his death duties (estate tax) to the French state were paid in the form of his works and others from his collection. These works form the core of the immense and representative collection of the Musee Picasso in Paris. FEUILLE D ETUDE OFFSET LITHOGRAPH FROM RENOIR

This is an offset lithograph from world renown artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) titled "Feuille DEtude (Study Sheet)" from the suite "Aquarelles et Dessins". This piece features several sketch studies of a mother holding her child. This piece has been signed in the plate by Renoir and also includes some of his personal notes regarding the sketch. This was published by Daniel Jacomet in a limited edition of 500 in 1956. This piece includes a certificate of authenticity. The framed image measures 38.5"h x 24.25"w. Renoir (1841 - 1919) was a French impressionist painter and sculptor, born in Limoges. Renoir went to work at the age of 13 in Paris as a decorator of factory-made porcelain, copying the works of Boucher. In 1862 he entered M. C. Gleyres studio, where he formed lasting friendships with Bazille, Monet and Sisley. His early work reflected myriad influences including those of Courbet, Manet, Corot, Ingres and Delacroix. He began to earn his living with portraiture in the 1870s; an important work of this period was Madame Charpentier and her Children (1876; Metropolitan Mus.). Renoir traveled in Algeria and in Italy (1881-82), returning to Paris where a successful exhibition (1883) established him financially. After a brief period, often termed harsh or tight, in which his forms were closely defined in outlines. From 1903, Renoir fought the encroaching paralysis of arthritis at the same time that his work attained its greatest sensual power and monumentality. Despite illness and personal tragedy he began to produce major works of sculpture (e.g., Victorious Venus, Renoir Mus., Cagnes-sur-Mer). Renoirs work is represented in most of the important galleries in the world. The Art Institute of Chicago; the Barnes Collection, Merion, Pa.; Clark Institute, Williamstown, Mass.; and the Louvre have large collections. His son, the film director Jean Renoir, wrote a biography about his father in 1962. (333850)
